Norway will allocate more than $4 million to protect submarine cables
The Norwegian government has decided to allocate an additional 43 million kroner ($4.3 million) to strengthen the protection of underwater telecommunications and pipeline infrastructure.
Among other things, the measures include the purchase of technologies for detecting threats to underwater communication cables, obstacle detection tools for satellite communication, as well as reconnaissance in areas where important underwater infrastructure is located, reports “Europeiska pravda”.
Due to geographical and physical features, it can be difficult to quickly identify threats to underwater objects, so additional technologies are needed to solve the problem, the Norwegian government explained.
Norway has decided to strengthen the security of the gas and oil extraction infrastructure after the explosions on the Nord Stream gas pipelines. Shortly after the incident, the state sent a specialised vessel to inspect the underwater gas pipeline in the North Sea.
Norway also put its energy sector on high alert and deployed its navy and air force to patrol maritime facilities.
