Omelyan: a shipping channel can be created on the site of the Kakhovska HPP
On the site of the Kakhovska HPP destroyed by the Russians, a canal can be built to restore navigation on the Dnipro.
The terrorist attack by the Russian Federation on the Kakhovska dam significantly complicated navigation on the Dnipro. One of the solutions to the problem could be the construction of a channel with mechanisms that will raise or lower ships. This was stated by former Minister of Infrastructure the publication Delo.
“In 2016-2019, Ukraine transported 19 million tons of cargo through the Dnipro. Theoretically, the capacity of the rivers of the Ukrainian basin reaches 30-40 million tons. This is a figure we can go to, because this way we will remove a significant load from the roads, but I am not sure whether it is necessary to rebuild the Kakhov Dam for this,” said the former minister.
Omelyan noted that the expediency of the reconstruction of the hydroelectric power plant or the construction of other hydrotechnical structures instead of it should be determined by the industrial, agricultural or recreational potential of the region.
“There must be a clear economic policy, what Ukraine will be like after the war. And based on this, we have to develop the economic recovery of the affected region. If we focus on the industrial potential of this region, it’s one story, if it’s about agriculture, it’s another, if we focus on the recreational potential, it’s a completely different strategy,” Volodymyr Omelyan said.
