The Ukrainian Navy outlined the prospects for demining the entire Black Sea.
This was reported on the air of “We-Ukraine” by the spokesman for the Ukrainian Navy, Dmytro Pletenchuk.
According to him, during the survey of the water area, divers and the Ukrainian Navy still detect sea mines from the Second World War. In view of this, no one can give a 100% guarantee for the entire water area, starting from the end of this war.
“As for the situation in general, we now have three large ports in Odessa that are working, which are actually part of the infrastructure that ensures the operation of our grain corridor and, accordingly, this water area, these anchorages, directly the sea communication routes along which these vessels travel, we constantly monitor for mine safety. Of course, we react in case of detection of these threats, this is done non-stop by the Navy forces. Of course, we do not have the full amount of equipment and facilities we need, but we are coping with this task,” Pletenchuk noted.
He also added that it is currently impossible to assess the situation in the rest of the Black Sea area.
“Until an appropriate operation is carried out there, until there is a sufficient level of general security that will allow us to deploy mine-clearing ships, appropriate personnel and begin to survey this area – for example, the Dnipro-Buzhsky estuary, which gives access to the Black Sea, the rest of the area, where civilian vessels currently have no access – it is too early to say what the situation is there,” the spokesman for the Ukrainian Navy concluded.
As previously reported by USM, Ukrainian mine-clearing ship crews are undergoing intensive training.
