Poland extends investigation into construction of canal bypassing Russia until April

The investigation into corruption in the construction of the Vistula Spit has been extended until April 17, 2025.

This was reported by the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Gdańsk, Gospodarka Morska writes.

The prosecutor’s office plans to question witnesses and will consider appointing an expert in economics and finance to provide an opinion on the economic issues of the investigation.

“The investigation is ongoing, no charges have been brought against anyone yet, and the investigation has been extended until April 17, 2025,” said prosecutor Mariusz Marciniak.

According to him, there are currently two main areas of the proceedings. The first concerns the suspected former director of the Maritime Administration in Gdynia, the second – the former Minister of Maritime Economy and Inland Navigation

The case materials state that the investment costs were supposed to amount to PLN 880 million. In the end, they increased to almost PLN 2 billion.

At the same time, the former minister did not inform the Council of Ministers that the excavation of the Vistula Spit would cost twice as much as originally planned. The Supreme Audit Office noted that the minister also did not interfere in the activities of the director of the Maritime Office.

As a reminder, on September 17, Poland opened a new waterway connecting the Vistula Bay with the Gdansk Bay. Thanks to the canal through the Vistula Spit, Poland received a passage to the Baltic Sea independent of Russia.
