Polish farmers announced a new blockade of the border with Ukraine

Polish farmers plan to block roads and border crossings with Ukraine for an indefinite term.

The general strike is being organized by Polish farmers from the trade union “Solidarity”, writes RMF24.

On Friday, February 9, at 10 a.m., they plan to block border crossings with Ukraine. For what period – it has not yet been announced. In addition, temporary road closures should begin in some regions. They will last from February 9 to March 10.

“Brussels’ position on the last day of January 2024 is unacceptable for our entire agricultural community,” the farmers said.

We are talking about the decision of the European Commission to extend the EU trade agreement with Ukraine until June 2025.

“In addition, the passivity of the Polish authorities and statements about cooperation with the European Commission and compliance with all decisions of the European Commission regarding the import of agricultural products and food products from Ukraine leave us with no other choice but to declare a general strike,” the trade union statement reads.

As previously reported by USM, the operation of the maritime corridor partially compensated for the losses from the blockade of the Polish-Ukrainian border. Thus, in November 2023, GDP grew by 4%.
