Polish Foreign Minister Calls on NATO to Restrict Passage of Russian Ships in the Baltic Region

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has called on the EU to find a coordinated approach against the Russian “shadow fleet” in the Baltic Sea.
This is reported by Tagesschau.
“Germany or NATO could create a maritime control zone in the North Sea and thus control the entry of these old ships into the Baltic Sea,” said the Polish Foreign Minister.
Sikorski added that if even one of these ships sank in the Baltic Sea, the countries would face “an ecological catastrophe of unprecedented proportions,” and cited two disasters with old tankers in the Sea of Azov as an example.
Separately, the minister suggested that the West consider shooting down Russian missiles and drones over the territory of Ukraine.
“If you ask me personally: we should think about this,” he stressed. According to the minister, technically NATO and the EU are capable of implementing such an idea, but it should be a collective decision of the allies, and not Poland alone.
Earlier, USM reported that Germany promises to protect the Baltic Sea together with the Baltic countries.
