Russia accuses Ukraine of fire on sanctioned gas tanker in the Mediterranean Sea

Russian officials say the Arctic Metagaz gas tanker was attacked by Ukrainian naval drones.

The Russian Ministry of Transport confirmed the incident with the Arctic Metagaz gas tanker in the Mediterranean Sea and said that the vessel was allegedly attacked by Ukrainian unmanned boats “from the coast of Libya.” This is reported by hromadske.

The day before, a number of Western media outlets, citing sources in the maritime and security sectors, reported that the vessel could have been hit at around 4:00 a.m. in the area between Malta and Libya.

There were 30 crew members on board, all Russian citizens. According to the Russian side, they were evacuated.

As can be seen in the published photos, the tanker has a serious hole in the engine room area and is beyond repair. At the same time, there was no fuel leak in the Mediterranean Sea.

USM previously reported that a Russian ship involved in transporting weapons was spotted near Tunisia.
