Russia and China veto UN Security Council resolution to unblock Strait of Hormuz

Russia and China have vetoed a UN Security Council resolution that was intended to encourage defensive efforts to unblock the Strait of Hormuz.

This was reported by Ukrinform with reference to Bloomberg.

The resolution received 11 votes in favor, but was not adopted – Russia and China, which have veto power as permanent members of the UN Security Council, opposed it.

The document was proposed by Bahrain and was intended to encourage countries to “coordinate defensive efforts appropriate to the circumstances” to guarantee the safety of shipping through the strait.

Russia, an ally of Iran, expressed its dissatisfaction with the resolution last week, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the document would disrupt “very fragile opportunities for negotiations.” Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia, supported Lavrov during the meeting, adding that the resolution would “create a dangerous precedent” and provide “carte blanche” for escalation in Iran. USM previously reported that Trump had abandoned strikes on Iran in exchange for the opening of the Strait of Hormuz.
