Russia could have secretly bought weapons from South Africa
The sanctioned russian roller coaster Lady R was spotted at the naval base of the South African Republic.
On the night of December 8, the russian roller coaster Lady R was spotted in the Simons Town naval port. The vessel was being processed during one of the regular power outages, Daily Maverick reports.
Rolker left port around 6:30 a.m. Friday. Vessel tracking services show Lady R switched off her transponder earlier this week. Her last known position was near Cape Town, writes The Telegraph.
Deputies of the South African parliament demand an explanation as to whether the government is selling weapons to russia.
“The Minister of Defense “must explain to South Africans what the russian sanctioned vessel is doing at the Simons Town naval base and why there is so much secrecy around it,” MP Kobus Mare said. “This behavior causes concern among local residents, as the ship is under US and EU sanctions after russia’s invasion of Ukraine.”
Lady R is a relatively small vessel designed to transport vehicles and cargo containers. It belongs to the russian company Transmorflot.
In May, the United States imposed sanctions on Transmorflot and six of its vessels, including the Lady R, for illegally transporting weapons.
