Russia has organized new hubs for the transshipment of sanctioned oil near Greece

The Greek islands of Lesbos and Chios have become a new hub for Russian oil transshipment.

The area near the Greek islands of Lesbos and Chios in the Aegean Sea is being used for clandestine transshipment of Russian oil. Bloomberg reports this, citing data from Vortexa.

According to analysts, about a million barrels of crude oil, fuel oil and other petroleum products are transshipped here every month.

Experts emphasize the environmental risks associated with this practice. The increase in the number of transshipments between ships increases the risk of accidents, which can have serious consequences for the environment and creates challenges for ship insurance.

Previously, the main place for Rosneft transshipment was the Laconian Gulf in southern Greece. However, after the Greek navy began exercises in May to block this activity, the scale of operations in this region has significantly decreased. At the same time, Greece announced the continuation of military maneuvers in the Gulf area until mid-March.

Recently, USM wrote that the largest center for “shadow transshipment” of oil to circumvent sanctions was discovered near Malaysia.
