Russia lost control of the Mediterranean Sea: details
The spokesman for the Ukrainian Navy, Dmitry Pletenchuk, explained what the Russian Federation lost after the overthrow of the Assad regime in Syria and the withdrawal of Russian troops from the country.
Russia has actually lost control over the Mediterranean Sea, which significantly limits its military and geopolitical capabilities in the region. This was stated by the spokesman for the Ukrainian Navy, Dmitry Pletenchuk, according to Ukrinform.
Previously, the Russian fleet used the Mediterranean Sea as a tool to achieve its geopolitical goals. An operational group of ships was constantly located in the region, which was supplied through the Turkish Straits. However, after the shutdown of logistics from the Black Sea, Russia is forced to supply these groups by bypassing Europe, which significantly complicates its actions.
The Russian Federation kept various ships, including submarines, at the Syrian base in Tartus. Two of them — the Varshavyankas of the 636th project — remained in the region after the start of the full-scale invasion, as they were unable to return to the Black Sea. In addition, the base housed frigates, missile carriers and large landing ships that performed the task of ensuring the interests of the Russian Federation in the region.
According to Pletenchuk, the Russians relied on cruise missile carriers, which were supposed to ensure the Kremlin’s strategic tasks. However, now their capabilities are significantly limited.
At the same time, the Navy spokesman noted that the Russian shipbuilding industry has been in decline since the 90s. Most warships belong to outdated series, and the implementation of state orders is delayed for decades.
“I would like to note that a country that calls itself a superpower, which has 4 fleets and a flotilla, is unable to repair, for example, the only aircraft-carrying cruiser that comes from Mykolaiv. Or their flagship, which they are trying to write off — the Atomokhod — and replace it with the same one that has been under repair for 25 years,” Pletenchuk emphasized.
As USM reported, the Russians began withdrawing ships from the base in Syria, fleeing from the rebels
