Russia takes down its own icebreakers for spare parts due to sanctions

The Russian state company “Rosmorport” is forced to use part of the vessels as donors of spare parts.

So, for example, thanks to the decommissioning of the non-nuclear icebreaker “Yermak”, it will be possible to support the technical readiness of the icebreaker “Krasin”. This is what Vasyl Strugov, deputy general director of State Enterprise Rosmorport, says, Censor.Net writes.

In total, the Rosmorport fleet includes a little less than 300 vessels (290 vessels are indicated in the presentation), 268 are in operation. They serve 65 ports in 24 regions, Krasin said.

“For the short term, these vessels, which are not in operation (22 vessels), helped us not to go out of business. They became donor ships, there is nothing to hide,” Strugov admitted.

According to him, “Rosmorport” was already planning to put these vessels in the dock, to decommission them, after “the February shock, they accelerated the process.”

According to him, in order to solve the difficulties with the supply of spare parts, the modernization of Finnish-made icebreakers (projects 1101, 1105) is being discussed to extend their service life by 15 years. It is about six icebreakers: “Captain Dranitsyn”, “Captain Khlebnikov”, “Captain Chechkin”, “Captain Bukaev”, “Captain Chadaev”, “Captain Zarubin”.
