Russia uses Iranian “shadow” tankers to circumvent sanctions
A large part of the “shadow” tanker fleet of Iran and Venezuela is currently focused on the russian export of crude oil.
Recently, tankers with russian raw oil have increasingly disappeared from the radar. In this way, the aggressor country tries to bypass sanctions and hide its actual exports. This behavior was already demonstrated by Venezuela and Iran when the US imposed an embargo on the sale of their oil.
Russia is now actively using tankers that used to transport sanctioned oil from Iran and Venezuela, Splash 24/7 reports. According to Braemar brokers, 33 tankers of the so-called shadow fleet deliver russian oil and oil products to Asia.
According to preliminary data, 14 tankers are currently transporting russian raw oil to China, 8 to India, and two more to both countries.
In general, the volume of exports of Iranian and Venezuelan oil has decreased in recent months. At the same time, exports from russia to China are growing.
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, russia has been actively selling tankers. The Israeli monitoring company Windward recorded 180 facts of change of ownership from russian companies to foreign ones – and this in just 3 months.
Previously, USM reported that the cost of old tankers is increasing due to the sanctions against russian federation.
