Russian fuel oil approaches the coast of Mariupol

Fuel that leaked from the Russian tankers in trouble has already contaminated 15 km of the Azov Sea coast.

Fuel oil that leaked from Russian tankers after the accident in the Kerch Strait in December is moving towards Mariupol. This was reported by the press service of the Mariupol City Council.

According to local authorities, 15 kilometers of the Azov Sea coastline are already covered with fuel oil.

“It was previously reported that a concentrated oil slick with an area of 300 sq. km was recorded in the Azov Sea. The occupiers removed about 18 tons. However, fuel oil has been spotted again. In particular, it is moving towards Mariupol,” the report says.

Recall that on December 15, 2024, the Russian tankers Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239 collided and crashed in the Kerch Strait. As a result of the disaster, more than 4,000 tons of fuel oil entered the Black Sea, causing colossal environmental damage, which is preliminarily estimated at $ 14 billion. According to scientists, this is the largest fuel oil spill in the history of Black Sea navigation.

As previously reported by USM, on January 24, fuel oil from Russian tankers reached the shores of the Odesa region. Currently, work is underway in the Odesa region to monitor the consequences of fuel oil pollution of the Black Sea.
