Russian research vessel spies on Europe’s undersea cables, — FT

The Russian oceanographic research vessel “Yantar” of the Russian Northern Fleet is spying on Europe’s undersea cables.
The “Liga” reports this with reference to an investigation by the Financial Times.
The investigation claims that the ship “Yantar”, which was recorded in British territorial waters in January, is monitoring Europe’s undersea cables.
According to military experts, the Yantar was one of several Russian warships that concentrated in British waters for 13 months to continuously monitor critical infrastructure nodes, starting in the fall of 2023.
The FT managed to detect the Yantar near critical cables in the center of the Irish Sea in November 2024. At that time, the ship tried to hide its activities. The ship was also recorded near cables between Norway and its sovereign archipelago of Spitsbergen.
The vessel is equipped with underwater vehicles with manipulators for connecting to military and Internet cables and intercepting information from them, as well as for installing explosive devices with the aim of detonating them in the future.
As we recall, back in January, the Foreign Intelligence Service warned that the Russian “research fleet” has a huge sabotage and reconnaissance potential aimed at NATO’s underwater infrastructure in critical regions.
