Russian tanker under sanctions runs aground and temporarily blocks Suez Canal

A Russian-flagged tanker under sanctions has run aground in the Suez Canal due to engine problems.

The incident occurred on October 28 near the 48-kilometer mark of the canal, Marinetraffic News reports.

The sanctioned tanker was 19th in line, with all 18 ships in front of it passing safely. The incident temporarily halted 20 ships as the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) sent tugboats to assist in the lifting operation.

“The 274-meter-long vessel was successfully lifted at around 2:45 p.m. local time, with no reports of pollution or other damage,” the statement said.

The Komander is a 2004-built oil tanker sailing under the Russian flag. The vessel is operated by Hong Kong-based Yo Shui Marine Ltd and is on the sanctions lists of the US, UK, Switzerland and Ukraine.
