Sharks sank the ship of the Russian round-the-world expedition near the coast of Australia

Sharks attacked the Russian Ocean Way – TION catamaran in the Coral Sea, which was carrying participants of the Russian round-the-world expedition.

On September 4, sharks first attacked a ship carrying participants of a round-the-world expedition of the Tomsk branch of the Russian Geographical Society — “On the way of Russian Round-the-World Sailors,” reports rosZMI.

Then the rear left cylinder of the catamaran was damaged, as a result of which it completely submerged under water. The crew stayed in emergency condition for about a day.

On September 5, sharks attacked the ship again and bit the right balloon. The catamaran lost its balance and began to sink. The crew sent an SOS signal. After 45 minutes, the bulk carrier Dugong Ace, bound for Shanghai, approached the catamaran.

The crew loaded all their personal belongings onto the ship, but fortunately, it was not possible to evacuate the catamaran. There were no devices on the dry cargo, with the help of which it would be possible to lift the catamaran on board.

“Last night there were several shark attacks on the catamaran, as a result of which the balloons began to deflate, the vessel began to sink. The crew sent an SOS signal, and a ship came to help, which will take the expedition members to Brisbane, Australia,” commented Yulia Kalyuzhnaya, executive director of the society.

According to her, there were three people on board the catamaran: the head of the expedition Yevgeny Kovalevskyi, the captain of the trimaran Stanislav Beryozkin and a Frenchman named Vincent. None of them was injured.

The participants of the expedition published “exclusive footage of the rescue operation”.
