Ship agent company in Odesa region used to dump hazardous waste

In the Izmail district of the Odesa region, law enforcement officers uncovered an illegal scheme for handling hazardous waste.

As a result, land plots worth over UAH 23 million were contaminated, the State Environmental Inspectorate reported.

According to the investigation, a deputy of the Safyanivka village council was involved in organizing the scheme, who, together with a friend, created an enterprise. It officially provided agency services to ships, but was actually used for illegal enrichment due to violations of environmental legislation.

The director of the municipal enterprise “Komunalnik”, at whose landfill toxic waste was discharged, also joined the case. To disguise the crime, the participants concluded a fictitious contract with a licensed company for disposal, but its terms were not fulfilled.

Three people who were engaged in cleaning ships from bilge water with a high content of petroleum products were also involved in the scheme. Instead of proper disposal, this waste was illegally dumped at a landfill in the Izmail district.

Investigators reported suspicion to six defendants, including the director of the Kommunalnik enterprise and a village council member. They are suspected of land pollution (Part 2 of Article 239 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine) and abuse of power for the purpose of obtaining unlawful benefit (Part 2 of Article 364-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The court chose a preventive measure in the form of detention with the possibility of posting bail.

Earlier, USM reported that sand was illegally mined on a special vessel: the crew members face imprisonment.
