Shmyhal: the second harvest began in Ukraine during the war

This week, Ukraine began its second harvest since the full-scale russian invasion.

“We have already started the second sowing during the war. The first 16,000 hectares of grain and leguminous crops have been sown,” Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal wrote on Facebook

Shmyhal added that this week Ukraine and Poland simplified border crossing for agricultural products.

“We are working on the continuation of the grain initiative and expansion of transshipment of the Danube ports,” Shmyhal also reminded.

Earlier, First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Taras Vysotskyi said that this year Ukraine will be able to sow almost the same area as last year.

“This will make it possible to grow at least twice as much as Ukrainians consume. And also to maintain the export potential of the agricultural sector at the level of the previous year – more than $20 billion,” said Vysotsky.

He also added that in this year’s sowing there is a greater focus on oil crops. This will lead to a partial decrease in the gross production of grain crops in Ukraine.

“This will not have a significant impact on the domestic market, because we will grow at least twice as much as we consume. But this will affect the international markets, because as a result, it can support the trend towards rather expensive raw materials, high world prices for grains,” explained Taras Vysotskyi.
