South Korea imposes sanctions on ship carrying ore from North Korea and Russian company

The South Korean government has imposed sanctions on a non-flagged vessel that was detained for illegally transporting iron ore produced in North Korea.

The Russian company Consul DV LLC, which was supposed to receive the cargo, was sanctioned, Splash 24/7 reports.

In particular, the sanctions, which are due to come into effect within a week, were imposed on two Chinese nationals who were operating the vessel.

The Sunrise 1, which is currently under arrest in South Korean territorial waters, has been ordered to leave the country.

“The authorities have been holding it for more than nine months. The vessel is operated by Hong Kong-based Xiangrui Shipping. Its name was changed from Gain Star in May last year, about a month before it picked up 5,020 tons of ore from the North Korean port of Chongjin. Changing the name is a common tactic to circumvent sanctions,” the report says.

The investigation also found that Sunrise 1 was involved in a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2371, which prohibits the transfer of North Korean iron ore.
