The Black Sea has become the most dangerous region for civilian shipping

At least 40 crew members have died in attacks in the Black Sea since the beginning of 2026, exceeding the corresponding figure in the Persian Gulf.
This was reported by the Financial Times, citing data from the maritime security company Ambrey and the International Maritime Organization.
According to the data provided, more than 570 ships have been damaged in the region since the beginning of the year. The main threats remain missile strikes, drone attacks and mining of sea routes.
The situation deteriorated most in the third quarter. From July to September, 387 ships were hit – more than five times more than in the previous quarter.
Against the background of increasing risks, military risk insurance has become significantly more expensive. According to insurers, its cost in the Black Sea can reach 15% of the cost of the ship’s hull, which is almost twice the level in the Persian Gulf.
The worsening security situation has also affected Ukrainian agricultural exports. In August, the volume of maritime transportation of agricultural products was approximately 75% lower than the pre-war level.
Recall that in September, the Joint Military Committee expanded the zone of increased military risk to almost the entire Black Sea.
