The Crimean bridge destroyed the ecosystems of the Black and Azov seas

At the PACE meeting, the Ukrainian side appealed to the European community regarding the critical situation in the Black and Azov seas.

The military actions of russian federation against Ukraine in and around the Black and Azov seas are intensifying the ecological crisis, causing a serious imbalance in the ecosystems. This was stated by parliamentarian Yuliya Ovchinnikova at a meeting of the PACE Committee on Social Issues, Health Care and Sustainable Development.

According to her, the Kerch bridge, which was illegally built on the territory of the annexed Crimea without the consent of Ukraine, destroyed the biodiversity and ecosystems of the Black and Azov seas. Its construction had a detrimental effect on the sea and the people living in the region.

“The militarization of the Azov and Black Sea regions, including seaports, is a crime of ecocide and a violation of international humanitarian law, which must be prosecuted,” said the People’s Deputy in a report on the Council of Europe’s Strategy for the preservation of oceans and seas in the face of climate change.

Thousands of mammals, flora and fauna are also dying due to the combat operations of the russian fleet.
