The Danube Commission has abolished the status of Russian as a working language of the organization

The Danube Commission supported Ukraine’s proposal to designate English and German as the only working languages.

This was reported by the head of the Shipping Administration, Yevgenii Ihnatenko.

“Today, during the 102nd session of the Danube Commission, the Ukrainian side reported on another series of attacks by the Russian Federation on civilian objects and port infrastructure on the Danube on January 17, 2025. Such actions by the aggressor state violate international law, the principles of freedom of navigation on the Danube, cause condemnation from other member states and already entail negative economic consequences for Russia,” Ignatenko noted.

The head of the Shipping Administration noted that Russian, which has been constantly used by the Commission since 1949, will no longer be used at the headquarters of the Danube Commission. From July 1, 2026, Russian will also cease to be used in documents.

“The Danube Commission has repeatedly demonstrated its position in support of Ukraine. In December 2023, the organization made a decision on the incompatibility of Russia’s membership on an equal footing with other Danube states,” Ignatenko recalled.

Earlier, we reported that Russia was excluded from the international Danube Commission.
