The EU is hesitating about the ban on coal from russian federation

Several member states of the European Union opposed the new recommendations of the European Commission to ease the ban on coal exports from russian federation.

According to the European Commission’s new guidelines, the transport of certain goods from russia, including coal and related products, “should be allowed to address global food and energy insecurity.” The guidelines are currently under discussion.

However, some EU members, such as Poland and the Baltic states, criticized the proposals of the European Commission, reports “Evropeyska Pravda” with reference to Bloomberg. Countries fear that this will loosen sanctions and may actually allow imports of sanctioned Russian goods.

Sources in the EU claim that the new clarifications are aimed precisely at avoiding any negative consequences for third countries and primarily concern the export of fertilizers, while sanctions on russian coal remain in force.

But during the discussion of the recommendations at one of the meetings, EU members pointed out that there are also references to other goods, including cement and coal, and asked for additional clarification from the European Commission.

It will be recalled that the European Union and Great Britain stopped the import of russian coal from August 10 in response to russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine.
