The EU is preparing the 16th package of sanctions against Russia: aluminum, LNG and the “shadow fleet” are in focus

New restrictions could be introduced by the third anniversary of the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The EU has begun preparing the 16th package of sanctions against Russia, which will target key economic sectors and financial structures. This was reported by Radio Liberty’s Europe editor Rikard Jozwiak.

According to Jozwiak, the new package of sanctions plans to impose restrictions on Russian aluminum, agricultural products, liquefied natural gas, the “shadow fleet” and several banking institutions. The document will be considered for the first time by EU member states next week.

Poland, which currently holds the EU presidency, is calling for the package of sanctions to be adopted on February 24, the third anniversary of the start of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine.

Earlier, Poland, together with representatives of the Scandinavian and Baltic countries, submitted proposals for this package, in particular, on a ban on the import of Russian LNG.

The previous, 15th package of sanctions, adopted by the EU on December 16, was aimed at combating circumvention of restrictions, included measures against Russia’s “shadow fleet” and was intended to weaken its military-industrial complex. As USM wrote the day before, India will not accept Russian tankers that have fallen under US sanctions.
