The European Commission: a decision on agricultural imports from Ukraine has not yet been found
The European Commission continues intensive negotiations with Ukraine and five neighboring countries about the perspectives of the ban on the import of Ukrainian grain.
It will be recalled that on April 28, the European Commission agreed with five neighboring countries of Ukraine – Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, Poland and Slovakia – on restrictions on the import of four key products from Ukraine: wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower.
These restrictions are set to expire on September 15. Now the European Commission’s spokeswoman for trade and agriculture, Miriam García Ferrer, said that a further plan has not yet been agreed. A solution is currently being sought within the framework of a special coordination platform, which has already met five times.
“Now it is a bit premature to predict what will happen after September 15. We can say that we are monitoring the situation very closely. We check the import figures that are published every month. And we are in constant and regular contact with the five neighboring countries, and we are really trying to make sure that we can export grain from Ukraine and improve the transport situation to make this possible,” Ukrinform quotes the spokeswoman of the European Commission.
Miriam García Ferrer reminded that these restrictive measures were introduced in order “to give us time to solve these problems and find a solution so that grain can be exported from Ukraine.”
She also pointed out the importance of solving logistical problems. According to the spokeswoman, it is important to support Ukraine so that “the grain reaches its destination, either in the EU or on world markets, as this is an extremely important condition for ensuring food security.”
