The European Commission calls for refusing from Russian LNG

The European Commissioner for Energy called for a phased withdrawal of liquefied gas from Russia

The EU must reduce exports of Russian LNG and move closer to phasing it out. This was stated by the EU energy commissioner Kadri Simson, Reuters writes.

Over the past 12 months, the EU imported 12.4 billion cubic meters of Russian LNG. The volume of purchased Russian gas may be the same as in 2022, or even higher, Simson said at a conference in Warsaw.

The politician believes that the European Parliament and the European Council should add reliable provisions to the “gas package” that would allow member states to individually limit access to the export of Russian LNG.

Simson noted that before the winter season, more than 100 billion cubic meters of gas have already been stored in EU storage facilities. At the same time, due to measures to improve efficiency and reduce demand, gas consumption from August 2022 to June this year fell by 17%, compared to the average figure for the previous 5 years.

Previously, USM wrote that EU countries, led by Spain and Belgium, are again increasing imports of Russian LNG.
