The European Commission has allowed to increase the tariffs for the import of agricultural products from the Russian Federation
The European Commission has approved a proposal to increase tariffs on the import of grain, oil crops and their processing products from Russia and Belarus.
According to the decision of the European Council from March 22, these measures will be able to prevent the destabilization of the EU market. The European Commission says that these tariffs are necessary to combat Russian exports of stolen Ukrainian grain, part of which is illegally exported to the EU market, masquerading as Russian.
The European Commission emphasized that in 2023 the Russian Federation exported such products to the EU in the amount of almost €1.3 billion. The increased tariffs will also apply to Belarus in view of the country’s close political and economic ties with Russia.
“Today’s proposed tariffs will ensure that this illegal export method will no longer be profitable,” the EC said in a statement.
Earlier, USM reported that Lithuania is insisting on new sanctions against Russian exports.
