The freight of floating LNG terminals in Europe is becoming more expensive

Freight rates for floating regasification units (FSRUs) in Europe have risen sharply this year.

FSRU freight rates have increased due to a shortage of vessels and strong demand for LNG, Rystad Energy said.

On the eve of winter, European countries are stockpiling LNG on floating terminals in order to do without russian gas. Leasing an FSRU is cheaper and faster than building land-based LNG storage terminals.

The cost of renting an FSRU in Germany has doubled compared to last year, and is currently about $200,000 per day.

According to data from Rystad Energy, there are 48 such installations in the world, of which 42 operate on lease terms.

The relevance and price of FSRU is expected to increase even more in the wake of last week’s blow-up on the Nord Stream gas pipelines.

Freight rates for gas carriers have also increased. A global shortage of ships has led to a record increase in prices for gas carriers in the Atlantic.

Currently, transportation of American LNG by ship costs $400,000 per day.
