The Cabinet of Ministers has adopted a resolution on the extension of the State Targeted Scientific and Technical Research Program in Antarctica.

This was reported by the National Antarctic Research Center.

On December 30, the Cabinet of Ministers adopted a resolution on the extension of the State Targeted Scientific and Technical Research Program in Antarctica until 2027 (inclusive).

This will make it possible to finance Ukrainian Antarctic expeditions, the work of the Akademik Vernadsky station and the “Noosfera” icebreaker over the next two years.

Such a decision is very important, because Ukraine is one of the few countries in the world that has year-round stations in Antarctica, as well as the right to vote in the Antarctic Treaty.

In addition, Ukraine joins many international Antarctic initiatives and expands cooperation with other countries every year. Thus, the current Antarctic season of the Noosphere vessel includes collaborations with six countries at once: the USA, Britain, Poland, the Czech Republic, Mexico and Colombia.

After the end of the war, a new ten-year polar research program is planned, significantly expanded compared to the current one.

Earlier, USM reported that the icebreaker “Noosfera” crossed the Arctic Circle for the first time, maneuvering between icebergs.
