The head of the European Commission presented a plan to solve the problem with exports from Ukraine
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, responded to the five EU member states and offered them a settlement mechanism.
In particular, von der Leyen responded to the collective letter of Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia and Hungary, writes Evropeiska pravda with reference to the spokeswoman of the European Commission, Dana Spinant.
In her address, von der Leyen emphasized that she is fully aware of the fears of countries regarding the increase in the import of certain types of agricultural products to the markets of the European Union.
According to Spinant, von der Leyen also emphasized that a common European approach is needed to solve this issue, as it concerns the EU’s single market.
The President of the European Commission presented three proposals for responding to the situation:
• Support for farmers who were negatively affected by imports from Ukraine. The European Commission has already allocated 56 million euros to countries, and has prepared a second aid package of 100 million euros.
• The European Commission will apply preventive measures in accordance with current trade rules that apply to certain categories of agricultural products, including wheat, corn, rape and sunflower.
• The European Commission will conduct an investigation into the import of other categories of goods from Ukraine.
“On the one hand, we strive to support Ukraine in exporting, in particular, agricultural products, as this is a lifeline for the Ukrainian economy. We also strive to bring these agricultural products to world markets, where they are needed to solve food security problems. On the other hand, we are fully committed to supporting our farmers,” said Dana Spinant.
