The icebreaker “Noosfera” started its third expedition to Antarctica

The icebreaker “Noosfera” started its third Antarctic season, leaving Cape Town (South Africa) for Antarctica.

The flagship of the Ukrainian research fleet left for Antarctica to perform a new mission on November 17, the National Antarctic Science Center reports.

First, the icebreaker “Noosfera” will go to the Polish Antarctic station “Artstowski”, which is located on King George Island. A team of polar explorers and cargo will be sent there. After that, the ship will go to the Ukrainian station “Akademik Vernadskyi”. Cargo will also be delivered there, as well as a seasonal expedition.

“Before the new Antarctic season, a lot of maintenance and improvement work of the icebreaker was carried out. In particular, planned repair and maintenance of ship mechanisms and systems in dry dock, overhaul of ship power plants, and modification of their cooling system were carried out,” the scientific center said.

In addition, a Ukrainian-made cavitation fuel module was installed. It is used to improve the quality of cleaning and reduce fuel consumption and extend the motor life of engines.

The icebreaker should reach the Antarctic in December 2023.
