The Ministry of Defense explained how the Maritime Coalition helps Ukraine
Ukraine receives minesweepers, boats, naval drones, strike weapons, and modern technologies from international partners to protect the water area.
Eighteen countries of the Maritime Coalition will provide minesweepers, naval weapons, reconnaissance equipment, as well as support in training marines and ship crews for the Ukrainian Navy. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Defense.
In particular, the Netherlands and Belgium will provide Ukraine with three Alkmaar-class mine-clearing ships this year.
The United Kingdom previously provided two mine-clearing ships — “Chernihiv” and “Cherkasy”. They are currently based in British ports, where their crews are undergoing training.
The United States, the Netherlands, Canada, Sweden and Finland have provided Ukraine with boats for reconnaissance, special operations, search and rescue missions and transportation.
At the same time, a maritime training center has been created in Romania, where marines of the Ukrainian Navy are trained.
The Maritime Capabilities Coalition was established in December 2023 within the framework of the Contact Group on Assistance to Ukraine. It was initiated by the United Kingdom, Norway and Ukraine. The aim of the association is to strengthen Ukraine’s maritime security, protect its coastal regions and ensure freedom of civil navigation.
Today, the coalition includes 18 countries: Belgium, Bulgaria, Greece, Denmark, Estonia, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, the United States, France, Sweden, Portugal, Poland, Romania and Turkey.
Finland, Iceland and Canada are also involved in strengthening Ukraine’s maritime capabilities, although they are not yet official members. Australia and Japan are considering joining the initiative.
The Maritime Capabilities Coalition is one of eight international initiatives working within the framework of the Contact Group on Assistance to Ukraine. On January 9, 2025, during a meeting of the Coalition Capabilities Leadership Group (Ramstein format), the heads of defense agencies of 14 countries and Ukraine agreed on the roadmaps of all coalitions, defining further steps in military cooperation.
Recently, USM wrote that Ukrainian mine countermeasure ship crews are undergoing intensive training.
