The new owner of the port of Giurgiuleşti plans to increase the port’s capacity by 20–25%

The Port of Giurgiuleşti plans to increase its throughput capacity by 20-25% over the next year and resume container operations after Danube Logistics takes over the control of the Port of Constanta.
This was stated by the Chairman of the Danube Logistics Board, Gheorghe Betinca, during the Moldova Logistics Forum 2026, Mold-Street eet reports.
According to him, the construction of a new multimodal berth should begin in Giurgiuleşti in a maximum of two months. The work is planned to be completed within the next 12 months.
The new berth should allow the port to receive more vessels of various types and expand logistics operations. A separate direction will be the return to container transportation, which is currently not carried out through Giurgiuleşti.
Among the projects, a container barge connection between Vienna, Constanta and Giurgiuleşti is also being considered. The management of the Port of Constanta has already discussed this idea with the Port of Vienna.
At the same time, Giurgiuleşti has expanded the capabilities of vessels to operate in difficult weather conditions and low water levels. Currently, the port can service ships at night, as well as partially load them at the berth with subsequent reloading at the 72nd mile of the Danube from barges. For this purpose, a floating crane has already been attracted and the necessary approvals have been obtained from the Romanian side.
In the medium term, the new owner also plans to build a Ro-Ro and ferry terminal, launch regular lines, in particular Giurgiuleşti–Galați and Giurgiuleşti–Tulcea, as well as create an intermodal container terminal.
Such a terminal should operate as a feeder point for the port of Constanta and a distribution center for Moldova and southern Ukraine.
In April 2026, the Constanta Sea Ports Authority acquired Danube Logistics SRL, the operator of the Giurgiuleşti International Free Port, from the EBRD.
Earlier, Russia accused Romania of military support for Ukraine through the port of Giurgiuleşti.
