The Russian Federation cannot complete the construction of new ships for the war against Ukraine

The Russians probably still cannot resume the construction of ships for the Black Sea Fleet due to the lack of ship engines of the “Admiralty” series.

The Kremlin planned to build five ships for the Black Sea Fleet. However, the construction cannot be finished for more than 10 years, said Dmytro Pletenchuk, the spokesman of the Southern Defense Forces.

The Russians announced the construction of 5 small missile ships back in 2014. They began to be built in Zelenodolsk in Tatarstan. From there, they were to be lowered into the Sea of Azov by inland waters through the Volga-Don Canal.

However, after the occupation of Crimea and the start of the war in Donbas, the Russians were left without Ukrainian engines for frigates of the so-called Admiralty series. These gas turbine units were made at the Zorya factory in Mykolaiv.

The Kremlin tried to reproduce their production, but so far it has not been successful. After that, the Russians returned to the Small Missile Ship project, which was developed back in the 1990s, claims Pletenchuk.

“This is a smaller ship that has a river-sea zone. It is intended for the protection of territorial waters. It can be said that it is a patrol ship, but with cruise missiles on board, because it can carry out the task of shelling territories at fairly long distances,” explained the spokesperson of OC “Pivden”.

A total of 5 such ships were planned to be built for the Black Sea Fleet.

As Pletenchuk commented, the first of them did not develop as a ship – it is the “Zyklon”. The second was “Amur”, which left Novorossiysk the day before. The third was “Askold”, which was destroyed by the Defense Forces in Kerch. The fourth – “Tucha” – was also disabled.

Now Russia is trying to complete the fifth ship in Zelenodolsk – “Typhoon”.

Recently, USM wrote that the invaders change the location of ships in Sevastopol almost every day in order to escape Ukrainian attacks.
