The Russian general who ordered to blow up the Kakhovska HPP is facing a life sentence
According to the materials of the Security Service and the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Russian general who ordered to blow up the Kakhovska HPP was suspected.
Investigators have gathered evidence on Colonel-General Oleg Makarevich, commander of the “Dnipro” troop group of the Russian Armed Forces, the SBU reported.
According to the case file, the military commander gave an order to blow up the dam of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station on the night of June 5-6, 2023.
As a result of this crime, critical infrastructure facilities were completely destroyed, which led to the death of at least 35 people, the flooding of 46 settlements in the Kherson region and the flooding of 20 settlements in the Mykolaiv region.
What’s more, water supply to the Kherson, Mykolaiv, and Dnipropetrovsk regions, as well as temporarily occupied Crimea, was partially stopped due to the explosion of the dam. Among other things, this created a threat to the maintenance of the Zaporizhzhya NPP, namely, it disrupted the operation of the cooling system of the nuclear plant.
According to the SBU materials, Oleh Makarevych was informed of suspicion under Part 2 of Art. 28 part 2 of Art. 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (violation of the laws and customs of war, combined with intentional murder, committed by a group of persons according to a prior conspiracy).
He faces life imprisonment. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
