The ship Maersk was not allowed to enter the port of Spain because of the connection of the cargo with russian federation
The Maersk Magellan was scheduled to unload diesel fuel in Tarragona. The Spanish authorities refused permission for the ship to enter.
The Maritime Administration of Tarragona (Spain) refused to enter the port of the ship Maersk Magellan. The ship was carrying diesel fuel, probably of russian origin, the Spanish Ministry of Transport reported.
The cargo carried by Maersk Magellan was previously on the ship Nobel, which flew under the russian flag until July 1, 2022, and later changed it to the Cameroonian one.
In a statement, the ministry emphasized that the ban is in line with European sanctions, which prohibit access to the territory of the EU to any vessel registered under the russian flag after April 16, 2022, as well as to russian vessels that switched to another flag after February 24, 2022.
Maersk Magellan is known to have conducted a ship-to-ship diesel transfer operation from Elephant in the Mediterranean Sea. In the course of clarifications, a certificate of origin of the goods transported by Nobel was discovered.
This is not the first time that Spain prohibits ships with cargo from the fleet under the russian flag from entering ports. In April 2022, the maritime authorities of Barcelona refused to enter the port of the Black Star under the Maltese flag because it had previously conducted a ship-to-ship operation with a vessel under the russian flag.
