The UN does not have a “plan B” in case Russia withdraws from the “grain agreement”
The United Nations (UN) has no backup plan in case Russia pulls out of the “grain initiative.”
If Russia carries out its threats to withdraw from the “grain initiative”, the UN does not have a plan “B”, reports “Voice of America” with reference to UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric.
“There is the Black Sea. We cannot move the sea. We cannot move the Bosphorus,” he said.
Thanks to the “grain agreement”, since August last year, Ukraine was able to export over 30 million tons of grain and other food products by sea.
However, Moscow has repeatedly complained that it allegedly does not receive sufficient benefits from the initiative. The Russians argue that Western sanctions are curbing its exports of agricultural products and fertilizers, and are therefore demanding the lifting of a number of sanctions in exchange for agreeing to extend the agreement.
However, according to the US ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Russia “exports just fine. It exports grain and fertilizer at the same level, if not higher, than before the full-scale invasion.”
She added that the more the Russian Federation hinders Ukrainian exports, the higher the prices. And, since Russian exports are developing well, the terrorist country gets more profits.
Russia not only jeopardized the further fate of the “grain corridor” after May 18, but also blocked its work now. According to SCC data, the number of inspections of vessels heading through the corridor has significantly decreased from the highest rate in October (4.4 inspections per entry per day and 6.3 per exit) to 1.4 per entry and 1.5 per exit per day in May.
Earlier, USM reported that the Black Sea Grain Initiative is currently not working due to the blockade of inspections by the Russians. Elections in Turkey may also affect Elections in Turkey may also affect the further development of events.
