The Verkhovna Rada denounced the agreement with russian federation on the Sea of Azov

The government voted to terminate all treaties with russia regarding the Sea of Azov.

On the anniversary of russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the parliament denounced the “Treaty on cooperation in the use of the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait.” 303 deputies voted for the termination of the contract, People’s Deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak reported in Telegram.

The Government also decided to withdraw from the “Agreement on the establishment of the Black Sea Group of Naval Cooperation”. 305 deputies voted to terminate the agreement. Thus, Ukraine finally terminated the agreements with the terrorist country regarding the Sea of Azov.

The agreement on “joint use” of the Sea of Azov was signed in 2003 under pressure from the Kremlin. It was caused by the escalation of the conflict around Tuzla Island and actually strengthened the military and economic presence of russia in Ukrainian waters.

“The Treaty on Azov partially limits the effect of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, which Ukraine ratified in 1999. From the very beginning of the negotiation process with Ukraine, russian federation blocked the issue of determining the international legal status of the Sea of Azov,” stressed former diplomat Oleksandr Motsyk.

The Black Sea Naval Group (BLACKSEAFOR) was created at the beginning of 2001 at the initiative of Turkey. The participants of this agreement were all the countries of the Black Sea coast: Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Turkey, Georgia and Russia.

The initial goal of BLACKSEAFOR was to jointly promote security and stability in the Black Sea. However, since the occupation of the Crimean Peninsula in 2014, the initiative has effectively lost its validity.
