Trump threatens Russia with new sanctions against “shadow fleet”

The White House is preparing a new wave of sanctions against ships that help the Kremlin circumvent the oil embargo.

Donald Trump’s administration is considering new restrictions on Russian tankers that transport oil in violation of Western sanctions. This is reported by the Financial Times.

These measures could be Washington’s first sanctions package since Trump returned to power. The reason is Putin’s refusal to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine. According to American officials, these include blocking ships, hidden owners and potentially secondary sanctions against banks and oil refineries outside Russia.

The shadow fleet of the Russian Federation, which includes outdated tankers with opaque jurisdiction, has allowed Moscow to supply oil at prices higher than the G7 limits, in particular to China and India.

The EU and the UK have already taken similar measures the day before. However, as USM wrote, the fleet of sanctioned tankers is growing in the world despite the tightening of sanctions.
