Turkish carrier Akkon completely stops flights to Russian ports

Turkish container operator Akkon has abandoned calls to Russian ports due to increased risks for ships, crews and cargo.

According to the publication, Akkon sent an urgent notice to its partners about the termination of work with Russian ports. Ships heading to St. Petersburg have turned around and are returning to Turkey.
The last cargo destined for St. Petersburg is planned to be unloaded in one of the ports on the route. It is expected that it will be the Lithuanian Klaipeda.
The decision is associated with the increase in risks for shipping due to the Russian-Ukrainian war. According to TMT, on August 21, the Akkon Lines container ship was damaged and caught fire after a drone attack, and the crew was forced to evacuate.
Earlier, another Turkish carrier, Arkas, also stopped working with Russian ports. MSC in August canceled its Novorossiysk operations after the attack on its container ship and reoriented some of its flights to St. Petersburg and other ports.
According to the head of Transbosphor Maritime Transport, Mustafa Can, further disruptions to shipping on the route between the Black Sea and Egypt could cost Turkey up to $20 billion over the next three months.
As a reminder, that in the summer of 2026 alone, Russia attacked more than 50 civilian ships in Ukraine, almost 30 people died.
