Two Ukrainian seamen died on a ship near Brazil
Brazilian health authorities are investigating two mysterious deaths aboard the bulk carrier Caravos Harmony.
The Caravos Harmony departed Port Elizabeth, South Africa on February 10, bound for Brazil. On Sunday, February 21, the ship’s second and third engineers were found dead in their cabins. Brazilian mass media identified the dead as citizens of Ukraine — Oleksiy Stavytskyi and Denys Gutsa, reports The Maritime Executive.
According to AIS data, the bulk carrier arrived at the port of Macapa at the mouth of the Amazon on February 26. Brazil’s National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) and the State Health Agency (SVS) sent investigators to the ship to determine the cause of death on board.
Bulk carrier Caravos Harmony flies the Marshall Islands flag. The vessel was built in 2013. The bulk carrier has a length of 229 meters and a width of 32 meters. Its carrying capacity is 81,670 tons, and the current draft is 7.5 meters.
Caravos Harmony was last in the news in 2019, when the vessel collided with the bulk carrier Pan Acacia anchored in the harbor of Vancouver, British Columbia. Both vessels were damaged. In particular, in one of the cargo holds of Pan Acacia, a significant penetration of the hull was recorded. At the time, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada accused the Caravos Harmony of impaired communication between the captain and crew, and a faulty rudder angle indicator and compass.
