Ukraine and Canada discussed strengthening sanctions against Russia’s shadow fleet

The President of Ukraine stressed that total sanctions on Russia’s shadow fleet and financial schemes are the only way to a just peace.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a conversation with the new Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney. Among the key topics of the meeting was increasing sanctions pressure on Moscow, in particular against its shadow fleet, Zelenskyy announced on the Telegram channel.
“The Prime Minister said the right things about how to increase pressure on Moscow. The shadow fleet, the banking sector. We need to introduce total sanctions on everything that gives Russia funds to finance the war. This is the only way to force Putin to a just and lasting peace,” Zelensky said.
The shadow fleet is a network of vessels that illegally transport Russian oil, bypassing sanctions. It is through these schemes that Moscow receives billions of dollars, which it uses to finance the war against Ukraine. Kyiv has repeatedly called on international partners to tighten control over these supplies and introduce additional restrictions.
Also during the conversation, the parties discussed the humanitarian aspects of security guarantees for Ukraine, the future economic recovery of the country, and cooperation within the framework of Canada’s presidency of the G7.
Particular attention was paid to military-industrial cooperation. According to Zelensky, Ukraine has significant experience in the production of electronic warfare equipment, long-range missiles, and drones, and is ready for joint projects with Canada.
As USM reported, Canada previously imposed sanctions against 109 vessels of the Russian “shadow fleet”.
