Ukraine and Denmark discussed the role of biofuels in the decarbonization of maritime transport

A public discussion was held in Ukraine on the use of biofuels in maritime transport based on Danish experience.
As reported by the former Minister of Infrastructure Oleksandr Kubrakov, the event was organized by the We Build Ukraine think tank, involving Ukrainian and Danish experts.
The participants unanimously emphasized that Ukraine’s agricultural potential can become the foundation for the production of biofuels and biomethane, which will open the way to integration into European markets and accelerate the decarbonization of shipping.
As noted by the organizers, a study prepared jointly with Danish partners showed that the global requirements of the IMO and the European FuelEU Maritime standards form not only a regulatory framework, but also new opportunities for investment and modernization of port infrastructure. Denmark is already demonstrating this approach, transforming its ports into innovation hubs through the use of green energy and biofuels.
Key areas of development identified during the discussion:
Drop-in biofuels/biodiesel (FAME) and renewable diesel (HVO) – can be used without retrofitting existing engines, making these fuels suitable for rapid deployment in the global fleet. Production from non-food crops and catch crops creates additional opportunities for the agricultural sector without impacting food security.
Biomethane – its production from agricultural waste can ensure a competitive price and transportation to the EU through the existing gas infrastructure.
