Ukraine calls not to return Russia to the Council of the International Maritime Organization

Soon, the member states of the International Maritime Organization will vote on the composition of the Council, and Ukraine calls not to return Russia to the organization.
This was reported by the Ministry for Development of Communites and Territories of Ukraine.
As the ministry recalled, at its 33rd Assembly in 2023, Russia failed to be re-elected to the IMO Council for the first time – the international community reacted to the military aggression against Ukraine and systematic violations of maritime law. However, on November 28, the member states of the International Maritime Organization will vote on the composition of the Council.
“With the approach of new elections to the IMO Council, Ukraine calls on the international community to maintain the reputation and trust in the Organization. The return of the Russian Federation to the Council will mean impunity for a state that undermines the fundamental principles of safe shipping,” the department urged.
The ministry added that a state that undermines the safety of maritime shipping, endangers ecosystems and violates global food security should not lead the world maritime organization. USM previously reported that the IMO was unable to agree on the Net-Zero Framework due to US pressure: negotiations were postponed until 2026.
