Ukraine displaced grain producers in Eastern Europe

Europe recognized the devastating effect of the war in Ukraine on its own agricultural sector. Therefore, the European Commission agreed to pay the countries whose market was affected by the influx of Ukrainian grain.

The European Commission plans to allocate 56 million euros to three Eastern European countries affected by the influx of cheap and high-quality grain from Ukraine. It is about Bulgaria, Poland and Romania, reports Bloomberg.

Thus, in Bulgaria and Poland, the volume of own grain production and imports from Ukraine exceeded the figure for 5 years. Romania was added to the list because it is a hub for the “Paths of Solidarity”.

Poland will receive 30 million euros, Bulgaria – 17 million euros, and Romania – 10 million euros. This amount can be doubled thanks to co-financing from the budgets of EU member states.

We will remind you that Romania imported Ukrainian grain worth 1.24 billion dollars, far ahead of any other country in the world. In total, 13.9% of Ukrainian agricultural exports went to Romania last year.

Hungary and Slovakia will not receive financial support, as their combined production and import volumes do not exceed the five-year average. Previously, USM wrote that Ukrainian grain was the cause of farmers’ protests in Bulgaria .
