Ukraine has approved the methodology for calculating damages from russia’s action at sea

The Ministry of Environment has approved the Methodology for determining damage caused by russia in the Ukrainian waters of the Azov and Black Seas.

The relevant order of the department dated August 19 has already been registered in the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine under number 1253/38589.

The method will be used to calculate the amount of pollutants discharged into sea waters from russian warships and other vessels. They will also determine the total amount of damage in monetary terms — in US dollars.

The calculations will be used in courts in the future to recover damages from russian federation in accordance with the principles and norms of international law.

Currently, the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea suffer significantly from russian aggression in Ukraine. Among the consequences of military operations are noise pollution, which significantly injures marine fauna, in particular dolphins, and organic pollution due to the destruction of sewage treatment systems in coastal cities and villages.

It is also worth taking into account the damage caused by:

• oil pollution, which leads to the destruction of neuston – algae and small invertebrates that live near the surface film of water (in sea foam);

• chemical pollution due to rocket fuel entering the water, which contains organometallic compounds, as well as heptyl, which is very toxic and carcinogenic, etc.

• Damages from military actions of russian federation will be calculated by specialists of the State Environmental Inspection of Ukraine.
