Ukraine terminated the last agreement with russian federation in fisheries
Ukraine has officially terminated the last existing agreement with russia in the field of fisheries in the Sea of Azov.
The State Fisheries Agency has officially terminated the Agreement between the State Committee of Ukraine on Fisheries and the Fishery Industry and the Committee of russian federation on Fisheries in the Sea of Azov.
In order to comply with the termination procedure established by law, the termination of the agreement was supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Justice, as well as the Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine – the Minister of Economy of Ukraine.
Now the Ministry of Foreign Affairs must notify the counterparty, i.e. russian federation, of the termination of the Agreement.
The agreement has been in effect since 1993 and acted as a tool for implementing the provisions of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea in terms of ensuring the rational use of aquatic biological resources of the Sea of Azov basin.
In recent years, the State Fisheries Agency has repeatedly raised the issue of the possibility of terminating this agreement, but bureaucratic obstacles and a complex of international treaties did not allow it to be implemented without consequences for the economy, food security of Ukraine and the fishermen of the Azov region.
At the same time, by carrying out a military invasion of the territory of Ukraine and effectively blocking Ukrainian fishing activities in the Sea of Azov basin, russian federation made it impossible for the parties to fulfill their obligations under the Agreement.
“Currently, the actual point that has been made in the relationship between Ukraine and russian federation regarding fishing issues is legally fixed,” the State Fisheries Agency said.
