Ukrainian Danube Shipping “derussified” its vessels in Odesa Region
In Odesa, part of the vessels of the Ukrainian Danube Shipping Company, which had Soviet names, were renamed.
Now the ships of the fleet will bear names related to Ukraine, said Acting Dmytro Moskalenko, director general of the enterprise.
The process of renaming the Ukrainian Danube Shipping fleet was announced in August. Almost all of the company’s vessels were named in Soviet times: some of them are named after russian cities and “prominent figures” of the communist regime. Even the Ukrainian names of ships are indicated in russian – for example, “Zaporozhye” instead of “Zaporizhia”.
Now the ships will be named after Ukrainian settlements associated with shipping. These are cities on the Dnipro and ports on the coast of the Black and Azov seas. Also, Danube Shipping will keep the tradition of naming vessels in honor of captains, mechanics and managers of shipping.
Currently, the Ukrainian Danube Shipping together with the State Service of Maritime and Inland Water Transport and Shipping are developing new names to prevent duplication.
There are already the first results of renaming:
ship “Khabarovsk” — “Mariupol”;
“Ivanovo” – “Genichesk”;
“Orenburg” – “Feodosia”;
“Anton Onika” — “Mykolaiv”;
“Yakov Batiuk” — “Berdyansk”;
Volodymyr Kurylenko — Kyiv.
The full list of new names in the Ukrainian Danube Shipping promised to be published later.
