Ukrainian hydrographers master unmanned survey vessels thanks to IHO support

Training on the use of autonomous hydrographic platforms, which are increasingly used in the world for the study of shallow water and complex areas, was held in Kyiv.
Specialists of the State Hydrographic Service of Ukraine underwent training on conducting survey work using unmanned hydrographic vessels. This was reported by the press service of the agency.
The event, which lasted from December 2 to 4, 2025, was held with the support of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) and was aimed at improving practical skills in the field of modern hydrographic research.
Unmanned platforms are increasingly used in the world due to their compactness, low weight, mobility and ability to work in hard-to-reach areas – shallow water, narrow fairways and where traditional vessels face limitations.
During the training, Ukrainian hydrographers received theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the use of such vessels, processing of collected data using specialized software, as well as the features of safe operation and maintenance of equipment in difficult conditions.
Special attention was paid to discussions between participants on the real application of autonomous systems in everyday work. Such trainings, as emphasized in the State Hydrography, are important for improving the qualifications of personnel and strengthening the national potential in the field of hydrography.
Also, as USM wrote, Ukraine previously presented new technologies for underwater mine clearance.
